Product Compatibility Quiz

Assisting customers in finding the correct products through response-based logic.

Concept & Purpose

One size does not always fit all. In the hitch and towing industry, it’s uncommon for one style of hitch to fit most truck and trailer setups. Because of the various builds of trucks and trailers, there are typically several variations for each branded trailer hitch. For example, at Andersen Hitches, there are 14 standard versions of their Weight Distribution Hitch. This multi-piece towing solution has different sizes, heights, and towing ratings to accommodate trailer frames and truck heights.

The various versions offer a variety of compatible hitches, but with so many options to choose from it can leave a customer paralyzed during the purchasing process—asking, “but which one do I need?” By creating a questionnaire/ product compatibility quiz, we were able to help a customer continue their purchasing process to receive the right product.

Data Management & Organization

I wish the questionnaire’s logic was as simple as a Buzzfeed quiz, but sadly, trailer hitch compatibility is a bit more complicated than a quiz to find out “which tv show character matches your personality.”

Prior to creating the compatibility quiz, I had to record the data for each variable to eventually validate the results at the end of the product compatibility quiz. Based on the datasheet to the right, here are a few things I had to consider for the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch:

  • What are all the different versions of the product?

  • What are the various parts that make up the product?

  • What different options are available for each part?

  • Is there a version of the product for each part combination?

  • What are some of the unique features of the various parts?

Once I was able to verify the product part # (SKU), the various parts, and the unique features; I was ready to put it into a visual step-by-step format.

Project Logic & Results

Using Type Form, I was able to create questions that would help determine which parts were needed for the customer’s truck and trailer setup. Type Form allows for logic-based questions to map out different end results. For the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch, I was able to use 9 total questions to determine 26 different end results. 24 of the end results offer an answer as to which version of the product the customer would need, 1 end result informs the customer the product is unfortunately incompatible, and 1 end result prompts the customer to contact Andersen Customer Service for more clarification.

Along with the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch, I created a quiz for their 5th wheel trailer hitch, the Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection. Based on over 5,000 responses to the Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection Compatibility Form, 96% of customers found the product they needed, while only 4% of customers were prompted to contact Andersen Customer Service for further assistance. This means the majority of customers using this form were not just more likely to move forward in the purchasing process, but they were less likely to require additional customer service.
